From Uncertainty to Opportunity: Ramazan’s Journey into Construction through Inspiring Work Experience

At just 15 years old, Ramazan from Kensington and Chelsea was uncertain of his future whilst studying for his GCSE exams. Keen to learn about his opportunities in construction, he joined our Building Opportunities programme.

For Ramazan’s first steps and to capture his enthusiasm, CYT connected him with Lords Group for a week’s work placement at one of their London builders’ merchant branches. There, he was trained to work on the trade counter, manage stock control, and update the computer system. He was also given insight into marketing, purchasing and finance from a merchanting perspective.

The team at Lords Group was so impressed with Ramazan’s confidence, enthusiasm, and adaptability. He quickly settled into his role and made a strong impression on the team.

Plumbing manager, David, said:

“Ramazan got involved with the team here and was quick to learn, following instructions and safety processes well. We enjoyed having him – it was a chance to meet the next generation and support our local community.”

David was able to spend extra time with Ramazan, giving him an idea of how a plumbing merchant serves the trade, demonstrating the materials and components involved.

Reflecting on his experience, Ramazan shared:

“I learnt a lot during the week and now have a better understanding of how builders’ merchants work and how they support the various trades. It’s been a great experience.”

Ramazan’s drive and positive attitude clearly paid off. He is working with our coaches at CYT on honing his employability skills further on our Building Opportunities programme, while exploring his career options. With his determination and the support of CYT, Ramazan is well on his way to building a bright future in construction.

Construction Youth Trust works in local communities across London and North Kent, targeting areas with a high proportion of low-income households and significant construction and regeneration.

Building Opportunities targets young people aged 14-16 at high risk of not making a successful post-16 transition. It centres on 1-2-1 coaching and ongoing employer engagement. The ultimate goal of this project is to support young people to transition into sustainable employment, education or training (EET) outcomes that are meaningful to their aspirations.
